Have you received a ticket for a moving violation in the Denver area? Speeding, failure to yield, crossing a median, running a stoplight, and other smaller violations are usually classified as infractions or misdemeanors, depending on the circumstances. More serious violations, such as hit-and-run, eluding, vehicular assault, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol (DUI), can be potentially be classified as felonies or aggravated misdemeanors under Colorado state law. In either case, a conviction could mean hefty fines, points on your driving record, a suspended or revoked license, increased auto insurance rates, or even jail or prison time.

The Colorado traffic points system

Any time you are convicted of a traffic violation in the State of Colorado, you will have points added to your driving record. The number of points added to your record depends on the violation. If you are over the age of 21 and receive 12 or more points on your record in a consecutive 12-month period, you can have your license suspended and your driving privileges taken away. The same can occur if you accrue 18 or more points during a period of 24 consecutive months.

Colorado residents between 18 and 21 years of age are considered provisional drivers. For provisional drivers, the threshold for license suspension is lower:

  • 9 points in a consecutive 12-month period
  • 12 points in a consecutive 24-month period
  • 14 or more points while you are between 18 and 21 years of age

For minor drivers under the age of 18, 6 points in any 12-month period can result in suspension, as can 7 points prior to your 18th birthday.
