Don't let a conviction for a moving violation increase your auto insurance rates

One of the most lasting effects of a traffic violation conviction is an increase in your insurance rates. While they may seem manageable at first, that expense adds up over time, and can stay in effect for years. Oftentimes you can save money in the long run by fighting a moving violation charge with the help of a knowledgeable defense attorney in comparison to pleading guilty and paying the related fines.

Understand how points on your driving record can affect you

In the State of Colorado, you can have points added to your driving record any time you are convicted of a moving violation. The amount of points added vary depending on the offense. For adults over the age of 21, accruing 12 or more points in a consecutive 12-month period can result in a driver's license suspension. Accumulating 18 points or more in a 24-month period can do the same.

For younger drivers, the threshold for suspension is lower. Drivers between the ages of 18 and 21 are considered "provisional drivers" in Colorado. Provisional drivers can have their license suspended if they accrue 9 or more points during a 12-month consecutive period, 12 points in a 24-month period, or a total of 14 points while the driver is between the ages of 18 and 21.

For teenage or minor drivers under the age of 18, it only takes 6 points in a consecutive 12-month period to have your license suspended, or 7 points before your 18th birthday, regardless of when those points were added to your driving record.

Even if you have already accrued enough points to result in suspension, traffic defense attorney Michael T. Kossen, P.C., can help you fight for a reduction in the duration of your license suspension, or a probationary license that will allow you to drive to work, school, or to other critical destinations, such as a doctor's office for an appointment.
