El Paso County Traffic Violations

EL PASO COUNTY TRAFFIC VIOLATION DEFENSE ATTORNEY

In El Paso County, CO, police and highway patrol officers can be zealous about catching people for moving violations. Speeding, crossing a median, failure to yield, running a light, and other smaller violations are generally classified as infractions or misdemeanors, depending on the nature of the violation.

Some traffic violations are very serious traffic misdemeanors such as hit-and-run, reckless driving, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol (DUI). A conviction for these moving violations could mean hefty fines, points on your driving record, a suspended or revoked license, increased auto insurance rates, or even significant jail time. Some traffic offenses are also classified as felonies under Colorado state law and can lead to a lengthy prison sentence.

An aggressive El Paso County traffic violation defense lawyer can act as your legal counsel and advocate, and will fight to have your charges reduced or dropped altogether. Since 1991, Michael T. Kossen, P.C., has served clients throughout Colorado, including Colorado Springs, Fountain Valley, Briargate, Peyton, Monument, Manitou Springs, and more. At the offices of Michael T. Kossen, P.C., we offer free initial consultations for all moving violation cases, as well as flexible appointment scheduling.

Understanding the traffic points system in Colorado

Driver's license points that you accumulate can lead to the suspension of your driver's license and driving privilege for up to a year in Colorado.

If you are convicted of a moving violation in the State of Colorado, points may be added to your driving record. The number of points added to your driving record depends on the violation. If you are over the agoage of 21 and receive 12 or more points on your record in a consecutive 12-month period, you can have your license suspended for up to a year. The same suspension can also occur if you accumulate 18 or more points on your driving record during a period of 24 consecutive months.

Colorado residents between 18 and 21 years of age are considered minor drivers. For minor drivers, the threshold for license suspension is even lower. If you accrue 9 points in a consecutive 12-month period, or 12 points in a 24-month period, you may have your license suspended. If you receive 14 or more points while you are between 18 and 21 years of age, regardless of the timeline, you may also have your license suspended.

For those under the age of 18 the law regarding license suspension is especially strict and provides for a suspension of the minor driver's license in the event the minor driver accumulates 6 points in any 12-month period or 7 points prior to the minor driver's 18th birthday.

Even you have accumulated too many points and are facing a driver's license suspension, we can assist you with trying to obtain a probationary license or a reduction in the length of your suspension, so that you can continue to drive to work and school or for necessary medical appointments.
